5 Key tips for Online Retailers Preparing Valentine’s Day 2017

It may seem early to start planning, but if you get a head start, you'll be prepared to make the most of the 2017 Valentine’s day. Here are 5 tips to get you ready.


1) Mobile first 

Today we live in a world where consumers want the flexibility to shop whenever they want, however they want, wherever they want. They are decision makers. They pilot the plane. If your potential customer is ready to buy your product during his commute, your site has better be mobile friendly. Imagine the user’s frustration if he can’t send some delicious chocolate to his or her better half for Valentine’s day.

And don’t forget that Google recently started penalizing sites that aren’t mobile-friendly. At this point, all Ecommerce sites should consider a mobile-optimized site an essential part of selling online.


It is worth spending some time making your site mobile-friendly, don’t you think?


2) Video 

Valentine’s day is one of those great moments of the year to share your love for a product or brand to everybody. Why not create videos for that particular event? For example if you are selling Tea online, you can ask your customers to post a video of them and their beloved drinking delicious tea they bought on your site. To encourage them to participate, you can add an incentive (eg. the author of the best video will earn x% off his next purchase). Then you can share all this brand new unique content on your social media.


Note that Facebook now officially favors video and is catching up to YouTube in terms of video advertising.


If you are thinking of another way to produce videos, keep in mind that producing quality video takes awhile, so you should start prepping your assets sooner rather than later.


3) Email 

Email is maybe one of the oldest marketing channel but is still number one in terms of reach. According to Deloitte people check their inbox 74 times a day. That’s a lot!


You as a marketer have a direct one to one relationship with the user. But we all know that “With great power comes great responsibility” - Winston Churchill. You never get a second chance to make a first impression, so make sure:

  • You have an in-depth understanding of your buyer’s journey as it is the foundation of a successful email marketing strategy.

  • Your email strategy is compliant with local laws (CASL, CAN-SPAM).

  • You use fundamental principles such as segmentation and personalization to make your message to the Inbox.

Valentine’s day is a great opportunity to engage or re-engage with repeat buyers and potential new customers.


4) Special offer

Be creative, think out of the box and come up with a great offer for Valentine’s day. Your competitor will have at least one special offer so you should have one too. Think about anything that will grab attention and send traffic to your site.


The trick is to design promotions that make you competitive without giving away too much. One of my personal favorites is increasing a gift card’s value. For example, if a shopper purchases a $100 gift card, you increase the value to $120. The consumer feels like he or she is getting an extra 20%, while in reality you’re only offering a discount of 16.6%.


5) Marketplaces

One of your main objectives is to attract leads to your site and convert them to customers right? Depending on the size of your business it can take up to a few months or even years to get enough traffic that generates enough customers. You can spend all of your time trying to push new shoppers to your site — or you can go find them where they already shop.


A marketplace is an Ecommerce platform that enables third-party sellers to sell new and used products and services. The leader is obviously Amazon. Most of marketplaces take a category-based commission for each transaction. Take a look at selling fees.
